The EAL Building Services Engineering (Level 3) – Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps qualification was developed to allow those in work-based learning to demonstrate and enhance their occupational knowledge, skills and understanding within this trade.
On completion, the qualification will provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to work effectively and competently in their trade across the UK. It is suitable for learners aged 16+ currently working in the trade area or learners who have completed a suitable Progression qualification in Building Services Engineering (Level 2).

- learners who have completed a suitable progression qualification in Building Services Engineering (Level 2)
If taken as part of an apprenticeship, then specific requirements must be met as part of the apprenticeship framework.
There are no formal English and maths entry requirements for these qualifications. But it is expected that learners will have a good basic understanding of English and maths. It is recommended learners develop further formal English and maths skills, such as Essential Skills or GCSE’s to support successful progression with this programme.
Learners will develop their knowledge, skills and understanding for the Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps trade, as contained in the National Occupational Standards.
The qualification will allow learners to plan and perform projects in their trade, against recognised standards, before reviewing and evaluating the quality of the project outputs.
The qualification will be portable throughout the UK and is aimed to develop learners’ ability to meet the demands of the building services sector in Wales.
The qualification is designed to be completed on a part-time basis within an apprenticeship.
The learner must successfully complete:
- two externally-set, externally-marked Multiple-choice tests
- one employer set, internally-marked Practical Project in the trade area
- one external set, internally-marked Oral Questioning assessment
- one externally-marked Professional Discussion.
On completion, the qualification will provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to work effectively and competently in their trade across the UK. Successful completion of this qualification supports learners looking to progress into related areas such as low-carbon technologies, system design and building energy management, as well as those seeking progression into supervisory roles. It also provides a foundation for further study on other Level 3 BSE courses or at higher levels, such as, Level 4 technical qualifications and beyond.
